CLIENT: Bliss Musical
LOCATION: Seattle, WA
DIMENSIONS: 4 X 5 x 8 ft
YEAR: 2020

BRIEF: A spectacular Rube Goldberg machine for the opening scene of the musical’s world premiere run. It had to be light enough to be handled by a small actor, move to match the blocking and fit the plot and character. Most dauntingly, it needed to be in Seattle by Wednesday.

SOLUTION: The character who built the Rube Goldberg machine had a backstory: she often built elaborate mechanisms. In collaboration with the director, we integrated the contraption naturally into the opening breakfast scene. The actor would launch a large prop egg across the room to another actor at the ready with a frying pan. With a single motion triggered by the actor, the egg was ushered through the machine by way of unhinged latches, counterweights and a rollercoaster-inspired incline, finally launching it to stage left.
